Adopt-A-Stream

Is there a waterway in Red Deer that’s special to you? Why not adopt it?

Red Deer’s Waskasoo Park system is the envy of many cities. You can help protect the waterways and the wildlife that depend on them by adopting a river or creek.

Your commitment can be as simple or as involved as you choose. With Adopt‑A‑Stream, you can work as an individual, group, or business to protect the waterways that make living in Red Deer so unique.

Who can adopt a Stream?

Anyone can be an Adopt‑A‑Stream volunteer! We welcome volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Adopt‑A‑Stream volunteers are individuals, families, groups of friends, non‑profit organizations, sports teams, youth groups, clubs, community associations, businesses—and everything else in between!

What would I have to do?

Adopting a stream is a long-term commitment, but the amount of time you put in each week or each month can vary.

Here are some examples of what adopting a stream can mean:

  • Picking up litter along waterways or riparian zones.
  • Keeping an eye open for any/all of the following, and reporting each as appropriate:
    • large/heavy littered items
    • vandalism
    • needles
    • rough sleeper camps
    • invasive plants and animals
    • general park condition

How do I adopt A Stream?

In the Adopt‑A‑Stream paper brochure (available from the Kerry Wood Nature Centre), the waterways within Red Deer city limits are divided into 14 sections. Each of the 14 sections is available for adoption by interested volunteers.

If possible, please review the paper brochure to read important information and get an idea of which of the 14 sections you would want to adopt. If you don't have access to the paper brochure, the link below should give you a rough idea of which section of stream is in what area of the city.

After reviewing the paper brochure, fill out this online Adopt‑A‑Stream Expression of Interest Form:

After filling out the online form, Green Deer organizers will be in touch with you further discuss your desired section and level of commitment.

What Streams are currently adopted?

At this time, three of the 14 sections are adopted. All other sections are available for adoption.

  • Section 7 | Waskasoo Creek (32 St to QEII)
  • Section 8 | Piper Creek (Piper/Waskasoo Confluence to 32 St)
  • Section 12 | McKenzie Creek (north of Garden Heights)
