Grounds & Boat Launch

Relax with a picnic lunch in the picturesque Red Deer River valley, or listen to the sounds of nature beside a crackling fire. There are multiple picnic tables and fire pits available on a first come, first served basis on the Fort Normandeau grounds. Please bring your own firewood and note there is no playground on the grounds.

The Crossing is a scenic place to launch a canoe for an afternoon paddle down the Red Deer River as it winds through the city and to other sites in the beautiful Waskasoo Park system. The boat launch has vehicle access.

The upper (overflow) parking lot is designated for river users to park their vehicles. The lower (main) parking lot is designated for visitors to the Fort Normandeau grounds and buildings. Please do not park in the lower parking lot if you are heading out on the river.

Boaters, paddlers, and rafters: if the upper parking lot is full when you arrive at Fort Normandeau, please be prepared to wait for an opening, or consider accessing the river from one of the many other boat and canoe launches located along the river. Do not park in undesignated spots. More information can be found on The City of Red Deer’s website.

The gates are closed and locked from dusk till dawn—access to vehicles in either parking lot is unavailable when the gates are locked overnight.
